My School Concert Recipe👩🍳
Are you thinking of how to wrap up the year with a bang? Then, why not have a concert with your students? Primary learners use music in their classes every day, making it easy to incorporate them into the concert. Secondary students also love music; so why not learn a song they genuinely like? For first-time concert planners, the prospect of long hours spent strategizing and organizing can be intimidating. And this year, I faced that challenge myself!! After weeks of hard work and preparation, my students gave a stellar performance that wowed the audience.
In this article, I’m going to share my “School Concert Recipe” so that other teachers can create a wonderfully memorable concert for their students and have a feast! So, let the planning begin!
Ingredients
- Include a diverse range of songs that encompass various musical styles and rhythms.
- Variety of performances such as music ensembles, solo acts, and performance poetry. This ensures a diverse and engaging show that caters to different interests.
- Rehearsal time, lots of rehearsals!
- Venue with good acoustics and lighting equipment.
- Professional photographer to document the concert. This allows students, parents, and the school community to relive the experience and can be helpful for future promotional efforts.
Step-by-Step Process
- Begin with a dash of curiosity and ask yourself, “How can my students show their English through a song?” This driving question is the foundation of your school concert project.
- Think of a theme and include songs organized around your central idea.
- Carefully measure language activities for each song, addressing meaning, language, and pronunciation. Additionally, encourage students to delve into the background of the bands, singers, and songs, adding layers of understanding.
- Add generous portions of rehearsal time! While rehearsing, consider whether singing it with live singers or using playback versions would be more suitable. Remember, adequate rehearsal time is paramount to ensure performers are well-prepared, ultimately minimizing mistakes and elevating the overall quality of the performances.
- Coordinate Logistics: Reserve a suitable venue with good acoustics, creating the perfect environment for your musical feast. Ensure access to microphones, speakers, and lighting to set the stage.
- Technical Rehearsal: Conduct a technical rehearsal to iron out any sound, lighting, and other technical issues. This is crucial for a smooth performance on the day of the concert.
- Promote the Concert: Spread the word through different announcements and reach out to parents, emphasizing the importance of their support.
- Host the Concert: This step is the secret sauce to thank everyone involved, introduce the theme, and express the importance of language development through music.
- Sprinkle with Post-Concert Activities: Arrange a feedback session as the finishing touch. This allows students to share their experiences and receive constructive feedback from teachers and peers, adding a layer of reflection to the musical celebration.
