St. Patrick’s Day STEM Activities
Do you celebrate with your students St. Patrick’s day? I love adding an educational element when doing seasonal activities with my learners. STEM is an excellent opportunity to include creativity and 21st-century skills in our lesson plans! Here are a few fun activities you can do with your students to get them excited about the holiday:
Activities for Kids
Challenge 1! Magical Rainbow
Teach about primary and secondary colors. Materials: Skittles (use primary colors only), White plate, and Hot water.
Procedure:
1. Arrange the Skittles on the plate in a rainbow shape using the pattern yellow, red, and blue.
2. Pour hot water into the center of the plate, just enough to get all the Skittles wet on the bottom.
3. After some seconds, the colors will mix, and a rainbow will appear!
Challenge 2: Shamrock Slime
Teach about energy. Hot and Cold. Materials: glue, water, borax, green food coloring, glitter.
Procedure:
1. Take two small bowls and add 1/4 cup of water to each.
2. In one bowl, add 1/4 cup of clear glue and a generous sprinkle of glitter and shamrock confetti.
3. In the other bowl, add 1/4 teaspoon of borax. Mix each bowl well.
4. Slowly stir the borax mixture into the glue mixture and watch your slime begin to form! Keep stirring until everything is mixed well.
Challenge 3: Bucket Towers
Teach about strength and structures. Materials: straws, string, masking tape, plastic cup, scissors, coins.
Procedure:
Students get in groups of 3 or 4 and design and then build a bucket tower for a leprechaun. It must be able to stand on its own and hold the gold! They can only use the material provided. The group that can make the bucket tower that holds the most gold is the winner!
Have fun!
